It was completed in 1899 and has been a jewel of the city of Peine since its renovation in 1994.

The origins of the church go back to the 13th century. After the devastating city fire in 1557, the Peiner Church was rebuilt on the site where St. Jakobi stands today. In 1692 the church was rebuilt as a baroque plastered building, supporting pillars were added in 1726 and rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style between 1896 and 1899.

The first Peiner Jakobus Church was built on the market square in the first quarter of the 13th century at the latest. Like the parish churches of the city of Hildesheim, whose council Peine was under at the time, St. Jakobi became Lutheran in 1542.
