The construction of the old Mattstedter church began around the year 1000, influenced by the Benedictine monastery of St. Gotthardt Heusdorf. During the Thirty Years War, the church was looted by passing Swedes and used as a quarter. As a result, the nave was dilapidated and had to demolished in 1654. With the permission of Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst, money was successfully raised throughout Germany for the renovation of the nave in its present form in 1707 (Wikipedia).

The bell tower was restored in 2006. There are three bells in it, including the newly cast St. Mary's bell. The organ was installed around 1800. The longship and the annex were restored in 2016 and rededicated in October of the same year.
