The Cathedral of Guatemala City is dedicated to the Apostle James the Elder (Santiago) and is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santiago de Guatemala...
The current Cathedral of Guatemala City was built between 1782 and 1815 after the old capital was abandoned and relocated in 1773 after it was destroyed by a devastating earthquake; the two bell towers (campanarios) were started in 1867 and completed in 1871. Although the dome had to be replaced and statues were destroyed, the walls, some of which were several meters thick, prevented major damage from the earthquakes of 1917/18 and 1976.
