The basilica sanctuary of Maria Santissima del Mazzaro or of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the main places of worship belonging to the diocese of Piazza Armerina, located in the historic center of Mazzarino, in the north-eastern end of Corso Vittorio Emanuele. The building is a typical example of late-Baroque architecture, widespread in the Val di Noto area after the 1693 earthquake. It was designed in 1741 by the Syracusan architect Natale Bonajuto known as "Santuccio", at the interest of the provincial Capuchin father servant of God Ludovico Napoli from Mazarin.
The construction of the temple was financed almost entirely by the people of Mazarin.
The church is a minor basilica and a Marian sanctuary.
