The St. Jozef chapel is located in Smakt. Over the past three centuries, Smakt has grown from a small pilgrimage site to a place of prayer and worship of St. Joseph. March 19 is the feast day of St. Joseph, and especially around that date it can be very busy: thousands of people flock to the chapel from near and far.

Background information

In December 1698, Johan Albert Bouwens van der Boye, baron of Neeryssche and lord of Venray, declared his willingness to build a chapel in the hamlet of Smakt. The conditions under which the foundation took place were laid down in an agreement with the pastor of St. Peter's Band parish, dated October 7, 1699. A short time later, the Bishop of Roermond gave his approval.

The main motive for building the chapel was the great distance from Smakt to the parish church in Venray village. A private chapel enabled some of the residents to attend early mass. After returning home, the other householders could then travel to Venray in time for the high mass. In addition to celebrating early mass, the chapel minister was obliged to provide religious instruction.
