      Distance to the sun: 4,540 million km

      The eighth and thus outermost planet of our sun is very similar to its neighbor Uranus. Neptune also consists almost exclusively of hydrogen and helium. It is the smallest of the four gas giants.
      It was discovered based on calculations based on Uranus' orbital disturbances, but is the only planet that cannot be seen with the naked eye from Earth.

      Diameter: 49,244 km - almost 4 times the earth
      Weight: more than 17 times that of Earth

      As on Earth, the tilt of the planet's axis causes a change in solar radiation during an orbit and thus leads to seasons.
      However, in contrast to our home planet, these last more than 40 years. Remarkable weather phenomena were also discovered on Neptune, e.g. B. Dynamic storms with peak speeds of up to 2,100 km/h, the strongest winds in the solar system.

      Neptune has the highest density of the four giants, making it the most compact gas planet. Due to its relatively large mass, it influences the orbits of many smaller bodies in the outer region of the solar system, which are therefore also called trans-Neptunian objects.

      Small bodies and dust also form a thin ring system around Neptune. On the largest moon, Triton, there are so-called cryovolcanoes, which do not spit out lava like on Earth, but rather ammonia and water vapour, and are therefore more similar to geysers on Earth. But while the eruptions of the famous Strokkur in Iceland "only" shoot up 30 m, those on Triton reach a height of up to 8 km!
