From 1351 the moated castle in Illingen was owned by the Lords of Kerpen, who made it the center of their rule. A visible sign of the former power over the country and people is the open red zigzag bar of the Barons of Kerpen in the Illing municipal coat of arms.
One can only speculate about the former appearance of the castle. The round tower in the southeast was preserved. Today it houses the castle chapel and a small ballroom. From the outer bailey in the north, the gate system from the 17th century has been preserved.
The gate tower and the residential building, which was only built in the 20th century, complete the ensemble. Not to forget the defense tower with its loopholes and rectangular windows.
Today, the remains of the former moated castle house a hotel restaurant that stylishly combines historical ambience and modern comfort.🏰🥂🍰☕
