The monastery in Cetinje was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt during Ottoman attacks. The current building dates from the 18th century. The monastery is almost completely unadorned. Its only external decoration is the capitals of columns that come from the original building, founded in the 15th century. The small, unassuming chapel to the right of the courtyard houses a shard of the True Cross and the mummified right hand of St. John the Baptist.
