located between the two lakes. Its plan, referable to the tenth century, is Basilian. The church, with a trefoil apse and atrium onto which the bell tower is grafted, dates back to this period. In the 11th century the Benedictines built a second place of worship (the apsidal structure between the presbytery and atrium) and in the 13th century a third ecclesiastical structure: the church with a single nave that is grafted vertically onto the bell tower.

The earthquake of 1456 destroyed a large part of the Abbey which forced the Benedictines to abandon it to go and occupy the ancient site of the laura basiliana, the cliff on Lake Piccolo.

It is probable that the abbey had come to occupy the entire isthmus between the two lakes. Today, thanks to new works, the excavation has been expanded and new evidence has been brought to light. The bell tower was also almost completely rebuilt.
