Landau Fortress could only be entered or left through two main gates - the "German Gate" in the north and the "French Gate" in the south. The imposing gates on the one hand secured the endangered entrances to the fortress, but on the other hand they also symbolized the claim to power of the French king. The Bourbon coat of arms (the lilies), the sculpted head of the Sun King and his motto: "Nec pluribus impar".

The French Gate – alternatively known as the Lower Gate, formerly known as the Porte de France – is a building in Landau in the Palatinate. It is a listed monument.
It forms the southern end of the old town and is located at Obertorplatz 4. It features an epitaph for Joseph de Montclar, also a listed monument.
The gate, built between 1688 and 1691, together with its northern counterpart – the German Gate – forms one of two surviving remnants of the main wall of Landau Fortress. Until well into the 19th century, it represented only one of two ways to enter or exit the city. Due, among other reasons, to the increasing obstacle that this had become since the opening of the Neustadt–Wissembourg railway line and the city's train station, the fortress was abandoned in 1871, and another, eastern entrance was created in the form of today's Ostbahnstraße.
The structure is a Baroque gate complex consisting of a hall, partially with three naves, and a warehouse built around 1690. The architect responsible was Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. The gate's design is a reference to the then French King Louis XIV.
