The castle served together with the opposite castle Rotenstein to monitor a section of road between Rottweil to Villingen at a crossing over the Eschach.

In 1315, Aigelwart von Falkenstein first mentions a member of the castle's family. 1399 was the castle in the feudal possession of Balthasar of Kirneck. The complex was probably a Dienstmannenburg the Lords of Lupfen, because 1466 was then destroyed and then referred to as Burgstall Castle Wildenstein including court by Count Heinrich von Lupfen to the monastery of St. Georgen.

In the 16th century, the castle was still ruinous, on the Rottweiler Pürschgerichtskarte of 1564, it was listed as a ruin, although the lying on the opposite Eschach bank castle Oberrotenstein or Castle Rotenstein has been intact.
