    The Friedburg was built in 1482 as a customs station. The castle became a popular rest stop for nobles on their way to Rome. In the 19th century, the building was used as a military hospital for a time and then stood empty for several years. Since 1982, there has been a restaurant and hotel in the castle.

        HISTORIC WALLS
        The history of Friedburg began in 1482 when Archduke Sigmund the Rich gave the order to build a customs station at a location that was more than favorable at the time.
        The building was not only intended to function as a workplace, but also to demonstrate the builder's power through its size and furnishings and to protect customs revenue and treasures from robbers through the massive walls. After all, the castle was a popular rest stop for dukes, princes and scholars and especially for kings, because in order to be crowned emperor, they had to go to the papal seat in Rome. To do this, they passed through the gates of Friedburg, as it was built on the main road between Italy and the rest of Europe.
        Passers-by often stayed overnight, fortified themselves and watered their horses before they continued their journey. The stay in the castle was reported several times and positively in various writings. After the end of the customs system in the 19th century, the castle served as a military hospital during wartime and then stood empty for several years.
        Since 1982, however, its gates have been open again and warmly invite locals and “foreign passers-by” to dine or spend a night within its walls.
