Different plant formations enrich the Mediterranean maquis of Ischia which represents a unicum for the favorable microclimatic conditions. Among the most representative tree species we find the olive tree and the holm oak; the arbutus, myrtle, oleander, laurel, filirea and mastic are found, however, among the shrubs. Broom, cistus and heather herald the arrival of spring with their scent, while the undergrowth is enriched with new colors with wild orchids, violets, cyclamen and anemones. Rosemary, nepeta and oregano make the island exclusive from an ecological point of view.
Then the helierisis and the prickly pears are splendid which, together with the aloe plants, give an exotic atmosphere to the island. On the rocky coasts there is the critmo and the rare statice of Ischia, unique in the whole world. In the more sheltered cliffs we find the Spartium Junceum, the tree euphorbia, in the grassy meadows anemones and cyclamen. Beautiful ferns grow in humid substrates and with northern exposure, as does the tiny Selaginella denticulata.
