The new Coimbra Cathedral is the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Coimbra.
The traditional diocese of Coimbra has existed since the 6th century; it also survived the phase of the Islamic-Moorish occupation until the reconquest (reconquista) of the city in 1064. The Jesuit Order founded its first settlement in Coimbra in 1541 (or 1543). The former Jesuit church planned and started by Baltazar Álvares and the entire convent complex took about 100 years to build (1598–1698). After the abolition and expulsion of the Jesuit order from Portugal in the 1750s, the building continued to be used as a bishop's church from 1772.

Unfortunately, the cathedral was closed. But it's still very beautiful from the outside. The upper part is especially worth seeing.
