This incredible bridge testifies to the ancient history of the city of Rimini. Started by the will of Emperor Augustus but finished by Tiberius. German panzers even passed over its ancient arches during the Second World War. A place of historical memory that is worth visiting.

The Ponte d'Augusto or Pons Augustus (also Ponte di Tiberio) is a Roman bridge over the old part of the Marecchia in Rimini (Italy). It is used by road traffic (except heavy trucks).

Work on the stone arch bridge began under Augustus and ended under his successor Tiberius in 20 AD. The bridge, which is around 62 m long and 8.6 m wide, has five round arches with different spans from 7.14 m to 8.17 m and very massive pillars, resulting in field lengths of up to 10.6 m. The bridge is covered with marble and decorated with blind windows on the pillars.

The bridge was described and depicted by Andrea Palladio in his I quattro libri dell'architettura, published in Venice in 1570, but with significantly narrower pillars. The work was fully translated into English in 1715 by Giacomo Leoni, who worked in England. Palladio's image served as a template for the Irish bridge builder George Smith's design of the Green's Bridge in Kilkenny, Ireland, which opened in 1766.
