The Portegrandi basin is a centuries-old gateway to the lagoon, as the river traffic channeled along the Sile passed through it: the 1723 epigraph, fixed on a wall in the western corner of the square, reports the amount of tolls that the boats had to pay in transit. The Siloncello canal and Santa Maria allow you to reach Altino, an ancient Roman city, where the National Archaeological Museum and the excavation areas are located with the remains of the paved roads of the walls and city gates, the mosaics that belonged to the noble domus. After Portegrandi, the wide bends of the river furrow a territory dotted with architectural, cultural and naturalistic riches: mills and Venetian villas, castles and wetlands.
