Only with the advent of plastics and their use for baskets did this old craft come to an end. Information is still available in the basket weaving museum in Hilfarth. After soaking the dried willow branches, they were either peeled for the "white wicker" such as B. laundry baskets or unpeeled for coarse baskets such. B. Potato baskets. A mixture of both types of willow allows attractive patterns for utility baskets, cribs, children's beds, newspaper or bottle baskets.
By the way, in contrast to other materials, such baskets often last a lifetime. My laundry baskets, which my father made when he was a trained basket weaver, were given to us for our wedding 41 years ago. They still look the same as they did at the beginning despite intensive use.
