Columbus died on May 20, 1506 and was buried in the convent of San Francisco, of which barely a trace remains. Three years later, his mortal remains were transferred to the Cartuja monastery in Seville.

Even after his death, Columbus found no rest. He died in Valladoid and, although he wanted to be buried in America, was buried in La Cartuja Abbey (the former monastery later housed a pottery factory and is now a contemporary museum) in Seville. In 1537 the bones of Columbus and his son Diego were brought to the island of Hispaniola (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic). When the French took over Hispaniola in 1795, the remains were shipped first to Cuba and then back to Seville. Now, in 1877, workers found a lead coffin in the Cathedral of Santo Domingo in what is now the Dominican Republic, bearing the name of Columbus. Since then, people have been puzzled over where, or what of him is really buried where. In 2006, researchers allegedly found out on the basis of DNA analyzes that the real Columbus was in Seville. The Dominican Republic refused an analysis.
