Agricultural and wine-growing village (the vine has almost disappeared in contemporary times), Saint-Léger-sur-Dheune was transformed into a town at the beginning of the 19th century with the digging of the Canal du Center filled with water in 1793 and later (1861-1867) the arrival of the Nevers - Chagny railway. Commercial and industrial activities then developed such as tile works, plaster works from a gypsum quarry in Charrecey and coal mining from 1830 to 1900. The population almost tripled in a century (1786: 915 inhabitants - 1836: 1,755 inhabitants - 1891: 2,395 inhabitants) to then decline with economic developments such as the abandonment of activities with a loss of profitability (mines, vineyards) and the decline of merchant navigation on the canal.

The bridge spans the excellent paved flat bike trail and the historic 1793 Canal du Centre, connecting at Chalon-sur-Saône the transeuropean EuroVelo 6 route (coming from the Black Sea) with the ViaRhôna route and leads via Digoin to the Loire Valley trails and Nantes with its intersection of EuroVelo 1 Vélodyssée along the Atlantic coast.
