The majestic fort stands on a 125 m high hill and is one of the most impressive in the state of Rajasthan, which is rich in forts. A winding road leads from the town to the entrance. The first gate is still marred by cannonballs. An indication that this fort really served defensive purposes. One of the gates is the Jayapol. It was built by Maharaja Man Singh (1806) after defeating the armies of Jaipur and Bikaner. The Fatehpol - or Victory - Gate was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh (1907). It commemorates his victory over the Mughals.

      Meherangarh Fort:
This majestic fort lives up to its name. It stands on a 125 m high hill and is one of the most impressive in the state of Rajasthan, which is rich in forts.

The last gate is the Lahapol – or Iron Gate. Next to it you will find 15 handprints as an indication that some of Maharaja Man Singh's widows threw themselves into the then usual cremation death (Sati) when his body was burned in 1843. Inside the fort, which still belongs to the Maharaja of Jodhpur and where he still lives, there are a number of courtyards and palaces. The suites of rooms in the palace have evocative names: Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Sukh Mahal (Palace of Joy) and Phool Mahal (Flower Palace). They contain a very good collection of items from the daily life of an Indian royal family and a collection of magnificent elephant saddles. At that time, the Maharajas rode on them in colorful processions through their capitals. Miniature paintings from the various schools hang on the walls. Also on display are musical instruments and of course the inevitable weapons of the Rajputs, palanquins, furniture and robes. In one room you will find a collection of children's cradles, often in very funny shapes. The rooms in the palace are beautifully decorated and painted and have very fine lattice windows made of red sandstone.
At the southern end of the fort, old cannons can be seen on the protective wall. Here the hill drops steeply and offers a beautiful view of the old town. The voices come clear to you from the houses far below; a remarkable event. Pay attention to the many blue houses: their color indicates that their owners are Brahmins. At the end of the fort is the Chamunda Temple, dedicated to Durga.
