The Ruthof was part of the reconstruction program after the First World War. It was built in 1922/1923 at the Regensburg Ruthof shipyard, after which it was named. The Ruthof was equipped with a slanted two-cylinder compound steam engine with injection condensation. The 7 blades of each of the two paddle wheels were articulated via an eccentric control so that they always dipped vertically into the water. The two chimneys could be folded in for passage under low bridges.

The Ruthof was part of the reconstruction program after the First World War. She was built in 1922/1923 at the Ruthof shipyard in Regensburg, after which she was named. After the ship's christening on February 21, 1923 and the delivery to Bayerischer Lloyd, the Ruthof mainly operated on the lower and middle Danube.

In 1932 the original coal firing system was switched to heavy fuel oil (Pacura). Due to the lack of oil in World War II, the ship was converted back to coal firing in 1942.

Around noon on June 20, 1944, the Ruthof hit a mine near the town of Érsekcsanád in southern Hungary and sank. Five crew members were killed.
