Since the 1870s, the construction of a second bridge Mosel in Trier was demanded from various sources, but at first one could not agree on a location. Because of its importance for the landscape and cityscape, a competition was advertised before the construction of the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge, the designs received included a steel suspension bridge, which was not allowed to be built out of consideration for the landscape. After the winning design by Prof. Paul Meissner from Darmstadt, the bridge was built in 1912 and inaugurated in 1913, which is documented by early filming. The bridge is a ferroconcrete construction, but it was veneered with natural stones to avoid creating a contrast to the Roman bridge and the historic buildings nearby. An originally planned sculpture on one of the piers was not realized. In 1945, German soldiers blew up the bridge during the retreat. After the war, they were rebuilt and slightly widened by a cantilever.
