A special treasure in the botanical garden is the Chinese Garden Qian Yuan, a classic southern Chinese scholar's garden, built in 1990, a gift from our partner university, Tongji University in Shanghai.

When the sensitive building was severely damaged by the weather after only a few years, our association The Chinese Garden, e.V. was founded in 2000 to prevent an impending demolition and to collect donations for the renovation. Even after the garden was reopened in October 2001, the association remained in existence and pursues two important purposes:

+ to monitor the building structure of the Chinese Garden and to organize and co-finance necessary repairs and maintenance measures after consultation and in cooperation with the Botanical Garden;
+ to make the Chinese Garden and its concerns known to the public through guided tours and other cultural events.
