The Deer Mountain Shelter is an interesting side stop — or turnaround point — on your hike up Deer Mountain. It's also a first-come, first-serve shelter for overnight use. This A-frame cabin can sleep a total of eight people, with four in bunks on the main floor and four in the loft above. Some hikers will continue all the way to Upper or Lower Silvis Lakes, or even thru-hike all the way to the Silvis Lakes Trailhead, using structures like this one for overnight shelter. However, this is an extremely strenuous hike on a trail with limited markings and tread. Only experienced hikers, who are certain they have enough fitness and navigational ability to find their way even in limited visibility, should undertake it.
