The flood of 1855

"Who dares to force the naughty look into so much lamentation," wrote the poet Tollens, the maker of our "Wien Dutch Blood", in 1855. He had then gone to see the consequences of the major dike breach in the night of 4 to 5 March 1855 in Dreumel. This breakthrough cost six lives and has left two major scars: the Ambtswiel, which was closed outside the dikes due to the later beringing, and the Nieuwe Wiel behind the Oude Maasdijk, in which a large farm disappeared this night.

On the Waaldijk, near building no. 7, there is a simple memorial commemorating the flood of 1855, when a dike burst and the flood claimed numerous victims. It was actually erected in memory of the 15th anniversary of King Willem III's reign, in gratitude for the king's interest. The monument consists of a memorial needle with an iron crown placed on a brick pedestal.
