The Henkeput (in the dialect 'Eenkeput') is located north of the Schone Grub on a slope of the plateau. It is an open funnel-shaped pit, turning into a cylindrical shaft, which gives access to a dome-shaped space excavated in marl with a flat bottom, from which a large number of niches emanate. The Henkeput (d'n eenkepot)
The mysterious Henkeput is approximately 12 metres deep. Little is known about its origin and name. The funnel-shaped pit, which turns into a shaft, provides access to a small space carved out of the limestone. What for remains a mystery. There is no connection with the prehistoric flint mines further south.
In 1886, the Henkeput was investigated by the renowned geologist Casimir Ubaghs and the young doctor and anthropologist Eugène Dubois (from Eijsden). According to Ubaghs, the pit dated from a transitional period, a kind of Roman Stone Age. A few years later, Dubois gained international fame for his discovery of the ape-man of Java.
When the pit was emptied, many human and animal bones came to light. Also found were remains of Roman pottery (shards of plates, bowls and vases). Research of corresponding 'marl pits' (Meerssen 1891 and Maastricht 1949) makes a Roman past plausible.
