The Kīpukapuaulu Trail takes hikers through an island of rainforest that escaped the lava flows around it. The area is a sanctuary for native flora and fauna, especially birds, and hikers should keep an eye out for teeming avian life. There are hiking guides available, and visitors can enjoy a self-guided tour of the biodiversity of Kīpukapuaulu by following the trail markers in a clockwise direction.
