The Diakonievene, located near Nijeberkoop, used to be a peat extraction area that was used by the church poor relief of Nijeberkoop to keep the local population warm during the winter. The remains of this peat bog are a few beautifully situated pools that are connected to each other, pieces of heath and the remains of a pingo ruin with wooded pollination.

The consequences of peat extraction are clearly visible in the nature reserve at the old pingo ruin. This round lake was created during the ice age and later became landfilled. The peat was later excavated again, resulting in the beautiful pool that is still there. A wooded moraine surrounds the pingo ruin, giving the area a sloping appearance.
