Como has always played an important role throughout its history due to its geographical location between Italy and northern Europe.
Tourism has also become increasingly important in this region since the 19th century and more and more people were looking for rest here. At first, a fleet of steamboats on the lake began to drive visitors back and forth. Later, with the opening of the St.Gottardo railway tunnel, the region became increasingly popular.

In 1894 the funicular Como-Brunate was opened. At first it was still operated with steam, but already in 1911 the traction system was switched to electricity. After some ownership changes and technical revisions, the railway is operated today by the company Azienda Trasporti Milanesi.

If you go along the lakeshore, you can see the railway track beautiful. Especially at dusk, when the track and the cars are lit, it looks beautiful.
