An idyllic and historic viewpoint with fantastic views of and across the Elbe to the Elbe Lateral Canal. Nothing of the former castle can be seen today. But you can still guess where it once stood.

There is a new information board at the Ertheneburg viewpoint, which says that instead of Ertheneburg, the name "Striepenburg" might be more appropriate... let's wait and see which name prevails.

The Old Salt Road trade route was of enormous importance for trade for a long time, as it connected the two Hanseatic cities of Lübeck and Lüneburg. The Ertheneburg fortifications stood at the Elbe crossing near Schnakenbek, opposite Artlenburg.

The castle was first mentioned in 1106 and was owned for a long time by the noble families of the Welfs and Ascanians. Henry the Lion stayed at the Erthenburg several times and made the castle the place of important political decisions.
In 1163, he issued the Artlenburg Privilege at a state assembly in Erthenburg.

Bishop Udo of Halberstadt was held prisoner here by the Welf Duke and in 1181 the castle was set on fire by Henry himself when he was fleeing from Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. The castle was then demolished by Bernhard of Saxony and the building material used to build Lauenburg.

The original form of the castle, which is still visible today, can no longer be recognized. However, the old rampart passage and the arched ring wall give an idea of the castle's former size. Idyllically located in the North German mixed forest, the journey into the Middle Ages becomes a natural experience.

The view is great! Has a little bit reminded me of the view of the Basteifelsen in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. There is also a (much nicer) view of the Elbe 🤗
