The church was rebuilt between 1607 and 1610 in the post-Gothic style by Prince Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn. It replaced a Romanesque church building, of which the western tower is still preserved. This late Romanesque tower, also known as the center tower, only received a half-timbered upper floor in the post-Gothic period.

The Georgskirche was built in 1607-1610. The pointed helmet tower (Julius-Echter-Turm, after the Archbishop of Würzburg) is typical of this period. The tower of the previous building from the Romanesque period has also been preserved. That tithe tower remained free-standing after the new church was built. In 1965-1966 the nave was extended to the west and connected to the tithe tower. The most striking decoration of the outer facade is a sundial.
