The Welgelegen residential complex in Akkrum was taken into use in 1929 as “a home for old ladies from the well-to-do middle class”. The initiative for this came from Zuster van der Vegt, who died in 1924 at the age of 82, who decided to do so in her will. The elegant main building with five houses on either side was taken into use five years after her death. A street in Akkrum is named after her. Men now also live in Welgelegen. The managing foundation decided to do so a few years ago. According to the will, the rental of the houses was possible 'to unmarried ladies and widows without resident children from the decent bourgeoisie, professing the Protestant religion and living in the province of Friesland or born in that province of Frisian parents, whose incomes are not sufficient to live in to provide for their maintenance properly, to ensure a carefree and quiet life as much as possible'. The main building was placed on the list of protected monuments in 1970.
