Originally, these trees were up to 150 meters high before they were pushed out of this country by the Ice Age and could only survive in the USA.

King Wilhelm I of Württemberg, who is said to have been very close to nature, ordered seeds from the Californian sequoia in 1865.

According to stories, the ordering of the trees, which are also called Wellingtonia, was probably a misunderstanding. King Wilhelm ordered "a lot", which is about 15 grams. The Americans understood “a lot (much) and sent him a pound, which at that time was 470 grams. The Americans sent around 100,000 seeds!

The small mammoth plants are very sensitive to frost. That's why 6,000 to 8,000 little trees were raised in Wilhelma's greenhouses back then. A small part remained in the royal garden.

The small sequoias were distributed to the foresters throughout the country. In a severe winter in 1879/1880, almost all the sequoias in Württemberg froze to death. Only around 200 trees have survived - including the specimens in Stuttgart and in the Welzheimer Tannwald (near Schorndorfer Straße).
