The Sutumer Feld, to the east of Beckhausen, is an open space mainly used for agriculture, surrounded by a typical Ruhr area scenery, which offers far-reaching views of important "landmarks" in Gelsenkirchen: the Rungenberghalde, the Veltins-Arena, and the large-scale industrial plant Horst (formerly Gelsenberg ) with their towers and tank farms.
The area is also characterized by a large number of ditches and streams, such as Lanferbach, Schlangenbach I and II, ditch on Sutumerfeldstrasse and ditch on Kurt-Schumacher-Strasse.
Lapwings, which breed there regularly, have been observed in the Sutum field for many years. In 2021 it was the only known breeding area in the city and it was something special that these red-listed birds breed in the middle of urban areas. For this reason, special measures are required to protect the birds and to secure their future population. In cooperation with two farmers and the district hunters' association, specific protective measures were implemented for the first time in 2021. The farmers have set up a 0.5 hectare fallow area on their fields and from April 1st they will refrain from further tillage, including fertilization and the use of pesticides, until the adjacent main crop is harvested. This enables the highly endangered birds to breed and raise their young on the fallow land. The protected areas are checked regularly during the breeding season.
