We can assume that a church or chapel was built here at this Frankish village square, in all probability by the first monks of Affligem when the abbey was founded in 1062. The building was strategically located on a ridge and was probably a lookout post on the important road Asse-Moorsel. The parish church is dedicated to Saint Walburga. She was an Irish missionary in the 8th century. The original church from the 12th century, in Romanesque style, was largely destroyed in 1356 by the troops of Louis van Male, Count of Flanders, during his invasion of Brabant. In 1363 it was rebuilt in Gothic style with sandstone from the local quarries. The cemetery wall is also listed and was restored in 1984. From that moment on, the deceased were buried in the new cemetery on the Langeweg. The church contains a Van Peteghem organ, like the one in the church of Essene.

Located on a slight elevation, at the crossroads of the main streets of the village. Surrounded by a cemetery with brick and sandstone wall; neoclassical gate pillars to the north. Next to it weathered gable stone with names of notables and year 1871. Gothic pseudo-basilica with transept, built from Meldert sandstone. Slate roof covering. Built for the first time in 1180 by order of the abbey of Affligem (presumably as a cruciform church). Reconstruction in 1363 by Jan IV Wolmeroy, abbot of Affligem, at the split of Baardegem as an independent parish. Major changes in the 15th to 16th centuries: all Romanesque parts, except the tower with a transitional style upper section, were demolished. Reconstruction with a three-aisled Gothic nave. Tower restored in 1608. Repairs and alterations circa 1891, designed by architect J. Goethals. Neo-Gothic sacristies from the fourth quarter of the 19th century. Restoration in 1968-1969 after a design by architect R. van Driessche.

The Sint-Walburgakerk is situated on a hill at the intersection of the main streets of the village. Opposite the church you can see the rectory; it was rebuilt in 1717 after being destroyed. It was given its current form at the beginning of the 19th century. The building was recently given a new function: it is being converted into a 'Huis van de Streek' with a museum café, a tourist information point and a regional shop.
