Guardian Angel Canyon, or pass, is a popular hiking trail in the Calico Basin area. As you scramble up the red Aztec sandstone gully you will often see rock climbers high up on both sides of the beautiful canyon. Be advised, some scrambling is required on this trail and you might need to use your hands to pull yourself up or carefully lower yourself down certain sections. As a general rule, try to stick to the left hand side of the canyon when traveling up from Calico Basin. As you near the top of the canyon you will walk through a flat terrace with several large pine trees. This little oasis is a great place to rest in the shade and look for wildlife. At the top of the canyon you will be treated to amazing views of the Calico Basin area and a unique view of White Rock within the Scenic Loop through a narrow orange notch. On the other side of the canyon, look out too for a circular rock carving of a guardian angel, the feature that gives this canyon its name; its relatively small and easy to miss!
