The small castle Søbygaard was built in 1580 by Duke Hans the Younger. The entire castle complex is surrounded by stone walls, in addition there is a moat which was created by damming. The main building can be reached via a new drawbridge built according to old standards.
Overall, there were 5 of these mansions on the island, but Søbygaard is the only one who has survived the time. Although the estate was always farmed at the time, it served more representative purposes because only rarely was the castle actually inhabited for a long time. In later years, the once very large plant was divided in 1875 then it became a very ordinary good.
The condition of the entire castle complex was not very good when you started then in painstaking work to completely renovated and restore. After all, the project took 25 years and so the visit today is almost a must to gain an impression of how stately it once was here to live and to live.
