It is worth climbing the flight of stairs on Great Samphire Rock to marvel at this impressive statue of St Brendan. The level of detail crafted into the two-ton bronze sculpture is incredible. One hundred heads of Gods are carved into St Brendan's clothing, to reflect the carvings at Clonfert Monastery, which he founded.
St Brendan was born on nearby Fenit Island in the 5th century and was a famous explorer. His travels were well chronicled across Europe and it is thought he could have reached America long before Christopher Columbus. In fact, Columbus is said to have been inspired by St Brendan after reading about his trans Atlantic voyage while at University.
