Federal Chancellor Konrad Adenauer visited the then Prime Minister on September 14, 1958 in his place of residence in Colombey-les-deux-églises.
On November 26, 1958, the first conference of the governments of the two states on German soil after World War II followed. It took place in the Kurhaus Bad Kreuznach. It was the beginning of a rapprochement that finally led to the Franco-German friendship treaty of January 22, 1963.

The meeting deliberately took place in the Kurhaus, which had served as the military headquarters for the war against France at the end of the First World War. This was where Hindenburg had commanded (when he wasn't enjoying hunting at the Gräfenbacherhütte). It was precisely in this place of hostility that the two heads of state painted great visions of commonality in 1958. Much has come of this. How can we best preserve and deepen our friendship with France today?
