This location is also known to nature lovers as the 'Broedvlakte Zwijndrecht'.
Not only birds have their trusted breeding ground here, but if you come here for a walk you will invariably meet Konik horses. They help to ensure a natural balance in the vegetation of the nature reserve.
History: The Vlakte van Zwijndrecht used to be part of the old Melselepolder, which was almost completely buried under meters of sand during the port expansion. The special thing about this 100 ha raised sand plain is that it contains numerous ponds and a sparse, interesting vegetation due to the clayey subsoil.
Because the area is closely connected to the Scheldt and is located next to the Groot Rietveld, it is an ideal breeding habitat for beach and pond brooders. After all, the food and breeding area are right next to each other, which makes the whole even more interesting for nature.
