The place Biertan is located on the former royal soil in a side valley of Târnava Mare. The first written mention dates from 1283. The fortified church was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. It rises on a steep hill in the middle of the village. The inner, oldest wall of the castle is dated to the end of the 14th or early 15th century. Today, the fortified church is a major tourist attraction and its silhouette is known worldwide. Every year, it is the scene of the so-called "Sachsentreffen", the Transylvanian Saxons still remaining in Transylvania.
