The Scheve Villa is known in Berlare and the surrounding area because it is... SCHEEF!
The villa is built on a (strong) plateau. The unstable subsoil (part clay, part peat soil) could not withstand the weight and one side slowly sank, without the house cracking.
Would this villa survive global warming?

This is currently the camp house of the chiro boys Sint-Jan-Berchmans Berlare.
Villa Astrid was originally intended as a hotel for the upper class. Right next to the luxuriously furnished building there was a beautiful pond with swimming cabins. (The Donkmeer itself also came up to the villa here.)
The crisis years and the Second World War meant the end for the hotel. The building collapsed due to the unstable surface on which the villa was built. The villa is built on 2 different surfaces: one side is on clay soil and the other side on peat soil.
In the early 1950s, the then already dilapidated domain was purchased by Mr. Todt from Ghent. He was a restorer of antique furniture. In 1954 he met the Van Hoecke-Vialne family. Together they made plans to turn the domain into a holiday home for youth movements (Chiro, Scouts, KSA, etc.). Until 1962, the Scheve Villa was mainly used for weekends and served as the end point for many air drops. Many Berlaren residents have spent a weekend here.
Due to the death of Mr. Gerard Van Hoecke in 1963 there was a decline in activities. Mr. Todt, the owner of the domain, died in 1969. The domain was subsequently purchased by the municipality of Berlare, which used it on the one hand as a studio for municipal staff and on the other hand as a storage facility for materials. In 1999, the Scheve Villa was renovated and occupied by the Chiro boys Sint-Jan Berchmans.
