Of supraregional importance is the place Caacupé because of the cathedral in its center Basílica de la Virgen de los Milagros, the episcopal church of the diocese of Caacupé. The central dome covered by a large dome, the largest church and religious center of the country, was begun in 1945 and could be consecrated after many construction delays, including lack of funds, only in 1988 by Pope John Paul II on his visit to Paraguay.

Every year in the week around the 8th of December (Immaculate Conception) hundreds of thousands of Christians from all parts of Paraguay, but also from the surrounding countries, gather daily in the church and on the large forecourt. The pilgrims pay homage to the miraculous Virgin Mary. This is shown in the church with a 60 cm, blue-robed statue of the Virgin Mary.
