Over the centuries the Rocca was repeatedly enlarged, strengthened, embellished, becoming one of the most notable noble residences in the area. Then the decline began: at the end of the eighteenth century it was plundered by Napoleon's troops, and in 1870 a strong earthquake seriously damaged it. Abandoned for a long time to neglect, in 1995 it was acquired by the Municipality of Meldola, which started the restoration, which is still in progress. For this reason the fortress is open to the public only on special occasions (in certain periods of the year concerts and shows are organized inside), and normally it can only be seen from the outside.
