Ascent between heaven and earth: the Renjo La Pass 🙏
It's one of the three highest passes in the Himalayas at 5360m. We started the ascent on November 13th, 2025, at 5:00 AM, so we weren't walking up through mud, but rather on frozen ice. Due to the amount of snow, we couldn't take the secured route, but instead had to take the direct path up, which was quite strenuous.

Finally at the top 🔝 Renjo La greets you not with triumph, but with awe.

    자주 묻는 질문

What is the typical duration required to cross Renjo La Pass?

Crossing Renjo La Pass itself is usually a full day's trek, often taking 8-10 hours from Lungden to Gokyo or vice versa, depending on your pace, acclimatization, and trail conditions. The overall trek that includes Renjo La Pass, such as the Everest Three Passes Trek, can range from 15 to 20 days.

Is Renjo La Pass suitable for beginner trekkers?

While Renjo La Pass is considered the least technically demanding of the three high Everest passes, it is still a challenging high-altitude trek. It requires a good level of physical fitness, prior trekking experience, and proper acclimatization. It is not recommended for absolute beginners to high-altitude trekking.

What permits are required to trek Renjo La Pass?

Trekkers need two main permits: the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit. These can typically be obtained in Lukla or Monjo, or in Kathmandu before starting your trek.

Are there tea houses or accommodation options along the Renjo La Pass route?

Yes, there are tea houses in the villages at either end of the pass, such as Lungden (or Thame) and Gokyo. These offer basic accommodation, meals, and hot drinks, providing essential rest stops for trekkers.

How does Renjo La Pass compare in difficulty to Cho La Pass or Kongma La Pass?

Renjo La Pass is generally considered the easiest of the three high Everest passes. Its trail is primarily a solid rock path, making it less technically demanding than Cho La Pass, which often involves glacier crossings and more challenging rocky sections. Kongma La Pass is also known for its steep ascents and descents over rocky terrain.

What are the starting points for a trek that includes Renjo La Pass?

Most treks to Renjo La Pass begin after flying into Lukla. From Lukla, trekkers typically head towards Namche Bazaar, and then branch off towards Thame or Lungden to approach Renjo La from the west, or towards Gokyo to approach it from the east.

What are the typical weather conditions on Renjo La Pass in October?

October falls within the post-monsoon season, which is generally considered one of the best times to trek. You can expect clear skies, stable weather, and excellent visibility. Days are usually sunny and mild, but temperatures drop significantly at night and at high altitudes, often below freezing. Trekkers should be prepared for cold winds and potential light snowfall, especially on the pass itself.

What essential gear and clothing should I wear for the Renjo La Pass trek?

Given the high altitude and variable conditions, trekkers should wear layers, including thermal base layers, a fleece jacket, and a waterproof and windproof outer shell. Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support are crucial. Other essentials include a warm hat, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, a headlamp, and a good quality sleeping bag for tea house stays.

Is Renjo La Pass suitable for winter trekking?

Winter trekking (December to February) on Renjo La Pass is possible but significantly more challenging. The pass can be covered in deep snow and ice, making the route strenuous and potentially dangerous. Trekkers may need specialized gear like microspikes or crampons, and should have extensive winter trekking experience. Many tea houses may also be closed during this period.

Are there any alternative treks or loops that incorporate Renjo La Pass?

Renjo La Pass is a key component of the famous Everest Three Passes Trek, which forms a challenging loop connecting Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La passes. This allows hikers to experience a comprehensive circuit of the Everest region, including Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp, without retracing steps.

What specific viewpoints offer the best panoramas near Renjo La Pass?

The summit of Renjo La Pass itself offers unparalleled 360-degree views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, the Gokyo Lakes, and the Ngozumpa Glacier. Additionally, nearby Gokyo Ri (a short hike from Gokyo village) provides another iconic vantage point for similar breathtaking vistas, often considered one of the best in the region.
