Schweinfurter Peterstirn is the name of the vineyard on the steep slope of the Burgberg to the Main. It is not large-scale and belongs to the Franconian wine-growing region, area Volkacher Mainschleife.
The Benedictine monastery in Schweinfurt Stella Petri (German: Peterstern) gave the Peterstirn castle its name. It was founded in the 11th century on the mountain where there was already a margravial castle. Not far to the west was the oldest settlement in Schweinfurt, which was first mentioned in 791 as Suuinfurtero marcu. The settlement and castle were abandoned after the imperial city of Schweinfurt, first mentioned in 1254[1], was founded two kilometers to the west. Not far above the Peterfront was an imperial castle of unknown age.

A historicist-style castle complex was built on the castle hill in 1874 and has housed a winery since the 1980s.

Today, Peterstirn is above all a steep hillside vineyard above the Main.

But there is also a historical place here. From 10th to 13th Century the castle of the Margraves of Schweinfurt and a monastery were located here. Later, the Teutonic Order was based here until the Free Imperial City of Schweinfurt was able to purchase the site in 1437 and remove the fortifications.

1873-1874 today's historic building was built, reminiscent of a castle. They are currently used as a winery.

Unfortunately, the Peterfront is not freely accessible at all times. It is privately owned by the Dahms family of winegrowers, who also cultivate the vineyard there.

However, there are good opportunities to take a closer look at the site, e.g. when visiting one of the grandiose wine festivals that the Dahms family holds there several times a year or at wine tastings to order combined with a tour of the site and the few old remains of the castle.
The Peterstirn has a great history, which - in terms of the area - is closely linked to the history of the founding of the city of Schweinfurt. (see "History" section). It is undoubtedly also a place worth seeing in Schweinfurt.

Carl Sattler built a tower on the vantage point in 1874, which has since been called "Karlsturm".

The upper tower room in the Peterfront tower is particularly worth seeing. (see photos below)

The ceiling paintings, all restored, are by the well-known painters Johann Ernst Sattler and Hans Thoma, one of the most important representatives of German painting of the 19th century. Some of his works are also on display in the Georg Schäfer Museum.
