Monument/portrait relief for Caspar Oechsle - Caspar-Oechsle-Platz (in front of the vicarage) - Schömberg - Zollernalbkreis
Caspar Oechsle (also Oexle, born February 24, 1752 in Schömberg near Rottweil; † June 21, 1820 in Kirchberg, Amt Überlingen) was imperial prelate and the last abbot of the Salem Imperial Abbey.
Caspar Oechsle was born on February 24, 1752 and was baptized Johann Nepomuk, probably the day after. His father was the organ builder Samuel Oexle. In 1770 he entered the Salem Cistercian monastery, where he took the religious name Caspar. He made his profession on November 21, 1771, and was ordained a priest on September 20, 1778. On March 11, 1802, he was elected Abbot of Salem by the convention in the third ballot. The Benediction by Gabriel-Melchior de Messey, Bishop of Valence, took place on September 5, 1802. On September 15, he received the power of attorney from Rome to become Vicar General of the Upper German Cistercian Congregation.
As Imperial Prelate in Salem, he was also a voting member of the Imperial Diet of the Holy Roman Empire.
Oechsle's renunciation of all rights to Swiss monasteries on October 3, 1806 enabled the breve In sublimi Apostolicae Sedis Specula, through which Pope Pius VII founded the Swiss Cistercian Congregation.
In Schömberg, the Caspar-Oechsle-Platz at the vicarage was named after him and a memorial was erected in his honor.
