The watchtower in the Sahara
Curious what the Lommel Sahara and surroundings look like from the air? You can discover this with your own eyes from a 30-meter high observation tower. The impressive construction has three platforms that offer you a wide view of the surroundings.
The location for the lookout tower, designed by architectural firm Ateliereen and MaMu architects, is not without reason the Lommel Sahara. An impressive piece of nature and one of the important hotspots in our city. For optimal accessibility, the location of the tower is connected to existing walking, cycling and driving routes.
The designers took the inspiration for the look of the lookout tower from the rolling lines of the sand dunes in the Sahara. This interplay of lines has led to a remarkable choice of material for the facade: rope. More than 3.5 kilometers in total. Rope has a natural color and appearance, but is at the same time flexible and relatively heavy, which means it will sag. By alternately wrapping the tower tightly and loosely, the characteristic lines of the Sahara are created. When climbing the stairs, the visitor looks through the ropes at the landscape.
