The Catholic branch church of the Holy Cross is the oldest surviving church building in the Munich metropolitan area and the only remaining witness to the village of Fröttmaning, which is now de facto a deserted village.
Holy Cross Fröttmaning (Kurt-Landauer-Weg 8) is located east of the A9 motorway, just south of the Munich North interchange of the A99 and A9 motorways, and north of the Fröttmaninger Berg, the former garbage mountain.
The history of the church begins before 815, the first documented mention of Fröttmaning. A deed of donation related to the church from 815 is the oldest document in the Bavarian State Archives. At that time, the Fröttmaning nobleman Situli donated a wooden church and the associated farmland to the Freising diocese, which was subsequently consecrated by Bishop Hitto of Freising.[1] The current late Romanesque building with its thick walls was largely built at the beginning of the 13th century and was later added to. Since the demolition of St. James' Church in 1955, there are no Romanesque buildings left in Munich's city center, making Holy Cross Church, unlike other former village churches, an important example of Romanesque architecture in the city. Holy Cross is also the oldest completely preserved church building in Munich's urban area.

In the 1930s, Holy Cross became a branch church of St. Albert in Munich-Freimann.

The church was threatened with demolition several times. During the construction of the Munich Autobahn ring road, zealous citizens, led by Ludwig Maile, the church warden of St. Albert, achieved the relocation of the Munich-North Autobahn interchange, whose branch toward Salzburg, according to the original plans, would have run directly over the cemetery and church. Since the demolition of the last farmyards for the Autobahn construction in 1969, Holy Cross has stood vacant. Until 1971, the church fell into disrepair and was plundered and desecrated. Valuable works of art and the two 15th-century bells were lost. In 1984, plans to extend the garbage dump to the church wall became concrete. However, following public protests, this plan was withdrawn. Later, Ludwig Maile's citizens' initiative campaigned for the church a third time, this time for the church's listed building to be included in the development plan for the nearby Allianz Arena, built between 2002 and 2005. The emergency road and its bridge had to be relocated 200 meters to the south.
