          The base plates of the semicircular colonnades are one meter above the square that stretches between the New Palace and the Communs. It is called "Mopke", an unusual word that the Dutch brought with them. It is a festival and parade ground paved with bricks.

          The colonnade arch has 158 columns. The triumphal arch is 24 meters high, the cartouche measures 2.50 meters. 62 finely chiseled sandstone figures crown the building. The two colonnade arches each end in a pavilion building.

                            Frederick the Great had the colonnade built between 1768 and 1769, at the same time as the construction of the New Palace and the Communs (outbuildings) in Sanssouci Park. The French architect Jean Laurent Le Geav drew up the initial plans, which were continued by Carl von Gontard. During the night of April 14-15, 1945, the building was severely damaged by a bomb. The dome above the Triumphal Gate in the center of the impressive complex also collapsed. Other parts of the building collapsed in the following years because they were more exposed to the elements. Between 2008 and 2014, the colonnade was extensively renovated using funds from the special investment program for Prussian palaces and gardens. The destroyed components were replaced, structural defects were remedied, and the badly damaged sandstone surfaces were restored.
